CD-ROM FAQ's Page

The following list covers some initial problems that you may encounter whilst viewing the CD-ROM. If you require more detailed help, please check relevant computer manuals or with your normal hardware supplier.

Some of these problems will relate to both releases of the WOW CDROM (1998 and 2001), although they were originally produced for the 1998 release.

Can't use Image Maps ?
Image maps are graphics which have had selected areas turned into hyperlinks. Many of the image maps on this CD-ROM have rectangular hyperlinks which are almost universally compatible. Some pages have polygon delineated hyperlinks which may not be compatible with older browsers.

To solve any such problems, the best solution would be to install one of the browsers included on this CD-ROM or to acquire an updated version of the browser you currently have installed.

Cramped Screen ?
This CD-ROM has been designed to give maximum navigation options at all times. Because the screen layout is compatible with all resolutions (without the need for scroll bars), it is likely that viewing the CD-ROM at lower resolutions will make the screen appear cramped.

To remedy this situation, simply change your screen resolution to the more normal resolutions of 800x600 or 1024x768. Check the settings on your Display Control Panel [Win95/NT] or Windows Settings Menu [Win3.x].

Making Bookmarks
One very important function that browsers allow is the recording of your favourite pages for quick access in the future. Depending on the browser you have, this is either accessed by clicking on "Bookmarks" or "Favorites" on the top drop-down menu bar. You can then click the "Add..." function to record that page's address. However, some modern web sites use certain formats (such as 'frames') which can confuse the browser, so a better approach is to right-click in the section of the page that you are most interested in and then select 'Add Bookmark/favorite'. If you have access to Netscape Navigator, you can create your own Guided Tours of this CD using this feature.

No Quicktime Sound or Video ?
This is most probably due to one of the following possibilities:

  1. You don't have a soundcard or speakers.
  2. Your speakers are switched off.
  3. You haven't installed the Quicktime software included within the initial installation and Download Zone. Even if you already have the latest version installed, you should run the installation included on the CD-ROM because:
    • The software will detect current versions and give you the option to abort the installation if necessary.
    • You may not have the Quicktime plugin which is vital to hear/see embedded Quicktime video.
  4. Your soundcard is not functioning correctly.

PDF Files not displaying in your Browser ?
As with the embedded
Quicktime files, if your computer will not display the PDF files, it is most likely due to one of the following possibilities:

  1. You have an older version of Acrobat Reader or you do not have the browser plugin installed. Solution: Run the Installation / Setup file from the CD's root directory or the Acrobat Setup file from the Download Zone.
  2. You didn't complete the CD's initial installation procedure. Solution: Re-run the Installation / Setup file from the CD's root directory or the Acrobat Setup file from the Download Zone.

Poor Quality Graphics ?
This is
another problem related to your monitor / display settings. To optimise the appearance of the CD-ROM and its images, you should set your display colour palette to 'High Color' (sometimes known as 'thousands of colours' or '16K colour') or 'True Color' (sometimes known as 'millions of colours' or '16.4 million colours'). This change needs to be undertaken in the Display Control Panel (Win95/NT) or Windows Settings Menu (Win3.x) as accessed for changing the resolution settings. Depending on the size of your video card, you may not be able to set screen settings of True Color 1024x768, so you may prefer High Color 1024x768 or True Color 800x600.

Printing Problems
If you have problems printing pages, it is most likely to be related to similar problems
making bookmarks. A special page (/html/print.htm) has been devoted to overcoming such problems.

Problems with the Games
The games are PC-compatible only. To run them from the CD, you should have completed the initial Installation (Setup.exe file found in the CD's root directory). If the games do not run from within your browser, you can still play them by running them from your hard disk - ensure that you undertake a full installation (requires about 12MB hard disk space).

Quicktime won't run or crashes ?
This is most probably due to your monitor's video drivers not being compatible with the current version of Quicktime. To remedy this situation, simply contact your hardware / monitor supplier for updated drivers or get them off their web site.
