ESYS

Company Overview

ESYS Limited specialises in consultancy and systems engineering. The company was formed in June 1990 and has established a successful business base in the European and North American space industry, working in applications of space technology in a growing number of market sectors.

The company offers:

  • research into markets for space technology;
  • business development planning to assist suppliers to enter into and exploit new markets;
  • development of technology demonstrators to underpin new business initiatives.

From the start an important theme for ESYS has been the benefits of synergy across all space technologies. We offer expertise in Earth observation, satellite communications and broadcasting as well as GPS. ESYS is increasingly working on behalf of potential customers for Earth observation and geographic data and users of high bandwidth satellite communications services. This involves reviewing how geographic data and telecommunications are used and developing strategies for technology and data that are defined in relation to overall business objectives.

This approach to synergy has differentiated our position in the market. In addition, the balance of consultancy and systems engineering skills enables our team to work effectively at a range of levels for our clients - from strategy/policy formulation, programme definition through to implementation (hardware and software), systems integration and more recently into operation of pilot satellite communication services in a number of market sectors.

ESYS is an independent company, based in Guildford and owned by the Directors and Senior Consultants. The Board comprises John Holt (Chairman), Mike Dillon (Managing Director) and Sally Howes (Commercial Director). There are four strategic advisors to the Board, Robert Key MP, Bruce Smith OBE, Captain Mike Caswell RN (retd) and Professor Ray Harris. In addition to the Directors, ESYS employs eleven full time consultants, one part time consultant and three administrative personnel.

Focus on Earth Observation

For potential users of Earth observation data, ESYS offers:

  • independent views on the suitability of these data to meet the needs of the organisation;
  • advice about potential sources and suppliers of information, based on our extensive market intelligence and network of contacts in the industry;
  • development of demonstration material for evaluation and raising awareness;
  • in-depth technical assessment to verify potential.

For suppliers of Earth observation data, we provide:

  • information on the status of markets, competitive products and services;
  • promotional material;
  • market analysis and market testing;
  • support in market development, growing the customer base and business development strategies.

We work on a confidential and highly interactive basis with all of our clients. We have facilities and management processes to hold information collected through our market surveys in confidence.

A number of important projects for public sector clients have strengthened the company's position as a European leader in the provision of Earth observation market information, namely:

  • an assessment of the size of the market for European suppliers of Earth observation data. Undertaken for the European Commission, ESYS completed a first review in 1995 for the period 1990 to 1994 and this is currently being brought up to date to the 1998 position;
  • over three years of research and business analysis focused on future global markets for radar data from a European supplier;
  • a business case analysis for a dedicated SAR Interferometry Mission for Europe;
  • a sequence of four studies for the European Space Agency addressing:
    • commercial opportunities in the global marketplace;
    • a structural analysis of European Earth observation companies;
    • financing of market development and the identification of major strategic investors for European programmes;
    • the role of ESA relative to the emerging markets, industry and other players in developing commercial business;
    • specific product and market targets to assist in increasing sales of the ERS data;
    • market positioning relative to other satellite data sources.
  • the market opportunities and business benefits for small satellites for European industry;
  • prioritisation of research and technology projects in European space industry based on future markets for Earth observation.

These projects have established our credibility in the market and enabled us to win a further ten contracts for commercial clients in Europe, the US and Australia, both from the traditional aerospace industry and also new potential investors. These commercial contracts have covered many markets (both civil and military), a range of future missions (radar, optical, medium to high resolution), have involved business analysis right across the world and begun to address the potential for transition into the emerging interactive digital service industry.

ESYS has developed a range of promotional publications and demonstrators to raise awareness of the potential applications of Earth observation data in the civil and military sectors. This has included a demonstration of the benefits of high bandwidth satellite communications for increasing the speed and efficiency of accessing these data.

Focus on Satellite Communications

In parallel to research in the Earth observation markets, ESYS has undertaken significant work in satellite communications and the broadcasting sector. Our current activities include:

  • an assessment of the current market and opportunities for satellite communications;
  • advising on the data communications architectures and options for implementation of applications across terrestrial and space-based services;
  • validation and implementation of satellite communications standards;
  • demonstrations of the application of satellite technology to a number of markets, such as agriculture, real estate and tourism;
  • implementation of a pilot service for telemedicine, MultiMED, providing full interactive access to medical simulation and training facilities over a satellite communications platform.
