THE REMOTE SENSING SOCIETY

Email: rss@geography.nottingham.ac.uk

The Remote Sensing Society (RSS) was established in 1974, and brings together all the proponents of remote sensing for Earth observation. It is dedicated to the advancement of remote sensing technology and the professional development of its individual members, and is thus both learned and professional. A key feature of the Society are the close ties that exist and are engendered between academia, commercial, industrial, governmental and international organisations. Within our corporate membership, close contacts are developed and maintained between academic and non-academic research groups and between them and the added value industry. In this way new ideas are disseminated and feedback generated.

The membership is drawn from those individuals and organisations with interests in :

  • Application of remotely sensed data to the solution of problems
  • Design and development of sensors and platforms
  • Development of techniques and methods for processing spatial data
  • Integration of remotely sensed with other spatial data.

Our Mission is:
To promote knowledge of remote sensing and to unify the subject, so as to help in developing techniques and their optimal deployment, and to promote economic and social benefits.
And
To strive for adequate investment of resources in remote sensing so that it can achieve its full potential.

The Society offers the following benefits to members:

  1. Quarterly Newsletter
  2. Highly reduced subscription to the International Journal of Remote Sensing
  3. Regular scientific meetings and conferences
  4. Proceedings and Publications
  5. Discounts on books supplied by a number of Publishers
  6. Co-ordination and promotion of remote sensing activities
  7. Electronic Bulletin Board
  8. Support and promotion of research in the field
  9. Encouragement of Commercial and Government participation in remote sensing
  10. Promotion of relationships and discussion with other related societies to ensure additional benefits to our members.

The Society has beneficial relationships with: the Photogrammetric Society, the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories, the British Association of Remote Sensing Companies, the Parliamentary Space Committee and the Canadian Remote Sensing Society; and is also an Ordinary Member of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing through its membership of the UK National Committee for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
