Help & FAQ:

The WOUK2000 CDROM contained a comprehensive Help section. However, no matter how much the CDROM was tested before launch, it could not be tested as effectively as 1.5 million people looking at it on their computers. Therefore, if you find a problem or have a suggestion for a work-around, please email Ian Downey (wouk2000@dti.gsi.gov.uk) and we will include it here.

The WOUK2000 Technical Project Manager and Project Manager authored an article for the Sunday Times magazine. We have included the unabridged version here in Rich Text Format and MSWord6/95 format. A one-page summary has also been included as Rich Text Format and MSWord6/95 format. (Remember to right click and select 'save target as' to save this file to your hard disk)

Quick Fixes

  1. A few people have been confused about how to start using the CDROM. The Readme and Install.txt files in the top level of the CDROM contain all necessary information. After you have installed the MrSID Viewer, click on the 'Start' button to start your default web browser. If this doesn't start you browser, either double-click the 'launch.htm' file in the top level of the 'WOUK2000' CDROM or start your browser and then click on 'File' followed by 'Open' and 'Browse' to your CDROM to select the 'Launch.htm' file. On the Sunday Times page, select 'Guided Tour' (single left-click over the different coloured text where the cursor becomes a hand) and then click on the test image (white box with words on) to check that your installation is complete. On the window that appears, select 'Open' and de-select the ticked box that says 'Always ask for this type of file' and then click OK. After zooming into the image by left-clicking over it, read the instructions, then close this window. Now answer the question below and go through the 15 pages of the Guided Tour by clicking on each number in turn. By the end of the Guided Tour you should know enough about the CDROM to be able to get the most out of it!

  2. If you have a problem installing the MrSID™ Viewer, for instance on Windows NT (eg if you're not the Administrator), you can install the Viewer on a different PC, then copy and paste all the contents of the MrSID™ Viewer directory to your computer. The MrSID™ Viewer does not place DLLs or other files in other locations, so it will still work by simply copying and pasting.

Please note: you will have to manually configure 'File Types' in your Windows Explorer - see 'Help' (or click 'NO' on the MrSID™ test page - 2nd page of the CD) on the CDROM.

  3. If you are not using Windows NT, then the problem is most likely due to the way your computer is trying to run the installation. To get around this, simply copy the MrSID install executable file (check install.txt in the top level of your CDROM for the path to this file) from the CDROM to your hard disk and then double-click it in Windows Explorer to start the installation. When the installation is complete, you can delete this file.

  4. During the MrSID installation, you will be asked for your name and company - you can enter any text here, it is part of the installation, but is not used for any other purposes.

  5. If your PC browser doesn't recognise the 'SID' file type and associate that with the MrSID™ Viewer, the easiest solution is to try another browser. Alternatively, you should configure the browser to recognise the '.sid' extension and associate it with the MrSID Viewer. Instructions for this are included on the CDROM in the 'Troubleshooting the MrSID Installation' section.

  6. If your Mac Netscape browser doesn't recognise the 'SID' file type and associate that with the MrSID™ Viewer, please run the automated patch on your computer: nnsid.sit by:
    1. Unstuffing the file
    2. Double-click on resulting applet
    3. It should configure Netscape to use the MrSID Viewer to load the MrSID files; but will quit Netscape first so it can update the preferences file
    4. Test by dragging a MrSID file onto Netscape or by using the test page on WOUK2000

  7. If you have any other queries about the MrSID Viewer, please visit the MrSID web site at www.lizardtech.com

  8. Some browsers may not be compatible with the Java Search - either a grey box will be displayed or text will appear where the search is located. In both cases, the remedy is to either use a different browser or to click under the search area (around the 'DATA' button - where the cursor changes to a hand) to load the Data Types Guided Tour. This lists all the images on the CDROM so that you can find those that interest you. You can also use the map on the Home page to zoom in.

  9. Some users with PC CILLIN anti-virus software may think the CDROM contains a virus. In fact this is a bug in older versions of PC CILLIN that thinks that the way that the installation works may be a virus. If you are in any doubt, scan it with a different anti-virus checker or don't use the CDROM.

  10. If you have any other problems, please check the Guided Tour, Help section and the 'Readme' and 'Install.txt' files for further information and assistance.

  11. Thanks to those people who spotted the CD's deliberate (!) mistakes - Hoo Fort is in Kent, not Essex and 'Middlesbrough' is the correct spelling for the town.

  12. If you think you have a faulty CDROM, please use the FREE CDROMs section to request another.

  13. All the answers to the Treasure Hunt and the Calendar passwords can be found on WOUK's secret page - to access it:
    1. Go to the 'Contents' section of the CDROM
    2. Single left-click on the 'developed' link at the bottom right of the page
    3. Scroll to the bottom of this page and then move your cursor around slowly in the centre (bottom) of the page (under the table) until your cursor changes to a hand to denote a link, then single-left click here
    4. You will load a blank page. Single right-click over the page and select 'View Source' from the drop down menu (some browsers enable this function in a different way)
    5. Scroll down to the bottom of this page (ignoring all the code characters) until you reach the text containing the passwords/answers
