Ten things to do with your WOUK2000 CDROM:

5: How far to go?
Explanation
You can measure distances on most of the vertical images (those looking straight down and giving a plan view) displayed using the MrSID™ viewer.

Requirements

  • MrSID™ (compatible with Windows95/98/00/NT and Power PC Macs)
  • Vertical imagery - especially the UK Landsat TM mosaic (this technique will not work with any oblique photographs (see WOUK2000 Glossary for explanation)).

Steps

  1. Open the required image in the MrSID™ viewer
  2. Then select the 'Measure' tool (looks like a pencil in the toolbar)
  3. Click over the image - either at the start and finish to get a 'as the crow flies' measurement, or at each 'breakpoint' to trace a specific route
  4. A measurement will be displayed for each segment. Click twice at the end to produce a total, displayed in metres.
  5. If the result is displayed in pixels, then you probably won't be able to use the image in this way - unless you click on 'Options', 'Units' and calculate the pixel size to enter here.
