The PROBA orbit and CHRIS pointing capabilities combine to give coverage approximately every 2 days at mid latitudes using platform roll angles up to 25° at platform.
For cloud avoidance purposes, it is proposed to operate a system of previous day acquisition scheduling. Every day a decision will be made on next day's site for data acquisition, based on meteorological forecasts. Orbit coverage software will be used to prepare a list of sites able to be covered on each day of the month. This list will include the across track viewing angles (with priority ranking) and a ranking according to normal cloudiness of the site for that month. For all sites predicted to have clear weather on the next day, the selection will be made using these rankings. For example, if a site in northern Europe is predicted to have clear weather on the next day this site would have a high priority for selection at the first opportunity during the month. Acquisitions over sites normally having clear weather conditions will be carried out when cloudy conditions are forecasted over the other remaining sites, and preferably at an optimum across track viewing angle.
