Ordnance Survey Ordnance Survey was a pioneer in the conversion of paper maps to computer data, with Britain being the first country in the world to hold all its most detailed mapping in digital form. It has an international reputation for the quality of its work, and its expertise is frequently sought from countries across the world, from Albania to Zambia via Germany, Korea and Sweden. In Britain, Ordnance Survey data underpins a vast range of public sector work, from running the 2001 census to locating suitable derelict land for housebuilding; from identifying areas of deprivation to planning new access to the countryside; and from controlling the flow of city traffic to helping the police detect crime patterns and catch offenders. And the uses in the private sector are enormous, ranging from targeting marketing effort to calculating insurance risks and from managing property portfolios to developing in-car navigation systems. In fact, so vital is Ordnance Survey's data to both the public and private sectors that a recent independent study calculated that around £100 billion worth of economic activity in Britain is dependent on it!
