RSAC Ltd
Earth observation images are only useful if they are converted into information of value to the user. Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Limited (RSAC) specialises in developing methods which make the most of Earth observation images for land applications. This expertise encompasses all types of satellite and aerial images. The key to success is the ability to match sensor capability to information need and develop systems which extract the information in an efficient manner.

  • Agriculture has been an important area of work since the company was founded in 1986. RSAC has developed CROPINS (Crop INformation System) which has a variety of applications relating to crop inventory. In 1996, 1999 and 2000, CROPINS has been used by RSAC to conduct the UK remote sensing control of the payments made to farmers under the EU Common Agricultural Policy.

  • High resolution satellite data (1 - 4m resolution) has arrived and in response RSAC and its partners are exploring the opportunities for supplying farmers with field maps in support of precision farming techniques.

  • Environmental concern is an important reason to develop applications of Earth observation data and RSAC has been working with ADAS to develop ways of monitoring how agri-environmental schemes benefit the countryside. Because parts of the UK are regularly cloud covered, cloud penetrating radar is a central feature in many of the RSAC projects.

  • Information derived from Earth observation has to be passed to the user in the most appropriate way and RSAC has responded to the opportunities provided by the Internet and high volume media such as CD ROM. Projects have been carried out for: BNSC, MOD, the Geographical Association and an educational trust.

  • Image management is another area where RSAC builds customised systems to derive information from remote sensing. A tool set has been constructed which catalogues scanned aerial photography and enables the digital images to be displayed over maps.

  • Research is necessary to develop new applications for Earth observation data. For example, RSAC has worked in partnership to explore the potential of radar data for measuring soil moisture, and to determine the degree of accuracy with which satellite images can be registered with maps. Preparing for the exploitation of new satellite sensors is all part of the work.

  • Working abroad has always been part of RSAC activities. Often Earth observation is best used in countries which are large and poorly mapped, as a result, the company has been involved in various projects in South America, South East Asia and China. RSAC is active in Europe, working alongside other companies, for the European Space Agency and the European Union.
