About the British National Space Centre
BNSC is Britain's space agency. BNSC advises and acts on behalf of Government and the Research Councils, to provide a focus for UK civil space policies, and help win the best possible scientific, economic and social values from putting space to work. The UK is the world's second biggest user of space data and technology. BNSC runs programmes for the support and development of:

  • Earth Observation
  • Space Science
  • Satellite Navigation and Communications Systems
  • Education and Awareness
  • Market Development
Funding for UK space activities comes from BNSC's Partners, and the main contributors are the Department of Trade & Industry, Ministry of Defence, Department of the Environment,Transport and the Regions, NERC, PPARC and the Meteorological Office.

BNSC also promotes Earth observation in education. For instance, it encourages the development of educational web sites such as those at the International Space School Educational Trust (www.isset.org) and the National Learning Network for Remote Sensing. BNSC has also developed strong relationships (linked to educational initiatives) with British astronauts such as Michael Foales and Helen Sharman.

BNSC has funded the production of 'Window on the World' and 'Window on the UK 2000' CDROMs as part of it's mission to promote the use of data from satellites.
